Guitars -The Spirit Of The Wave

The Mersey Sound Wave - Bill Hart In April this year an exhibition was held at the Beatles Story at the Pier Head called the Mersey Sound Wave. I was commissioned to make a special guitar to headline the exhibition called the ‘Spirit of the Wave’ by Bill Hart the artist that created it. Over the coming months I will show you how this ‘creation’ came about.

I had built an experimental instrument, that I call an ‘Iman,’ a cross between a miniature guitar and a mandolin, to try and get a third octave on a guitar without the need to have a neck so long it would take two to play it! It would be just a matter of adding an extra small neck to the guitar body.

To make the body for the Iman I played around with a set of French curves (architects tools) until I found an interesting shape that I liked. I liked it so much that I though I would build myself a bass using this body shape but adding a ‘cutaway’ to give it better balance on the bigger body and this would be called the K bass.

A while back I bought a stash of hardwood from a firm that was closing for a very good price, but never got round to looking at every piece so, now was the time. Wow!, What did I find amongst the normal run of the mill hardwoods?

Coco Bola

A piece of fantastic Coco bola that was big enough to make the body in one piece! A very rare find indeed and if you could find a piece as good as this and as big as this you would have to re-mortgage your house to pay for it!

The body shape from the Iman was transposed upward to make a decent sized K bass body and a mock up of the ‘finished’ bass was made. Many changes were made to this concept as it went along, but the basic outline stayed the same.

Coco bola is very dense and oily also very heavy and is tough on the tools, they get blunt very quickly, plus if you work on it too fast or put too much pressure on it, the oil comes to the surface and ‘boils’ staining the wood so great care needs to be taken when working it.

The outline of the body was cut our from the blank and every tiny scrap of wood that was left was put aside for later use this wood is to valuable to waste one little bit as you will see later.

Sir Cliff Richard paid tribute to his former band mate, saying: "Jet was exactly what The Shadows and I needed - a backbone holding our sound together."

 It Was 50 Years Ago...

Fifty years ago on February 9th, 1961 - The Beatles made their debut at The Cavern Club in Liverpool, England. The group already had a following in the dank nightclubs of Hamburg, Germany, but they had difficulty getting a booking at the popular basement club in their hometown. Mona Best, the mother of then-drummer Pete Best, had to beg the club's booker Ray McFall to secure the band even a lunchtime slot.[Rolling Stone]
