The Bumblies Movie

Charlie GallagherEarly in 2009,we got the band back together for one last go. I met up with Charlie Gallagher one of the originals and two new member s were added. Keith Turner who I had jammed with a few times at the MerseyCats and Steve Maloney who plays with Beat Club and Free Spirit. Steve is probably one of the best guitarists in Liverpool and we are very fortunate to have him on board and because he is a touch younger than the rest of us, we call him "Baby Bumblie" which you will see baby bumbliefrom the photos is a somewhat inappropriate title. We had a few practices and on August 30th were invited to play at the Hard Days Night Mathew Street Festival Gig organised by MerseyCats the Children's R&R charity. In total 14 MerseyBeat bands played that day including the Fabulous Undertakers and Karl Terry & the Cruisers who brought the house down with their special brand of early Rock’n’Roll. I thought it might be fun to make a movie of the occasion and include some nostalgic moments of the Liverpool Beat scene of the 60s. . Is it the beginning of the comeback? ...we will have to wait and see. I hope you enjoy it. Fergy

The Bumblies Movie...

I was fortunate to be a founder member of the Bumblies in 1964 along with George Robinson and Mike Parker who is sadly no longer with us. I left The Bumblies in late 1964 and the band went on to become one of the favourites of the "Third Wave" of MerseyBeat. The Bumblies changed their name in 1966 to The Cryin Shames and achieved success with their version of the Drifters number Please Stay. Early in 2009 we were looking to reform the Shames with George and Charlie Gallagher two of the original Bumblies who went on to play with the Cryin Shames. Unfortunately it didn't work out so Charlie and I reformed the Bumblies. We managed to cajole Keith Turner who was originally with the Blues Angels and Steve Maloney from Beat Club, one of the best guitarists in Liverpool to join the band. We played a few times at MerseyCats, but really started to get it together in time for the gig at the Hard Days Night Hotel in Mathew Street Liverpool as part of the Mathew Street Festival....and here's our movie of the gig along with some memories of that "FAB" period. The movie includes some images of 1964 which I hope will touch a nerve and a special presentation to Tony Bramwell (Watch for the T shirt moment) the Beatles Road Manager. The film runs for 30 minutes, make sure you don't miss the end and keep a hankie handy. Hope you enjoy it. Fergy

Ive had to reduce the quality a bit as the file is so huge, but hey who wants to look close at all those wrinkles!

Artys Merseybeat

Arty Davies one of the originals from the MerseyBeat boom is one of the great stories of the era. Struck down with Polio at an early age, Arty despite his disability became a great drummer. As the years rolled on Arty's condition got worse and he gave up drumming and had to revert to a wheelchair to get about. A few years ago encouraged by members of MerseyCats Arty got up to play again and he has never looked back. Since coming back Arty has played with many of the great MerseyBeat bands and has become a great friend of Faron the MerseyBeat legend. Arty is still playing with The Applejacks. Arty is also one of the great historians of the scene and has compiled his own "Merseypedia" of the bands who played in Liverpool during the sixties.
