The Shakers - Bringing Back The Benzedrine Beat

Experience the ‘Benzedrine beat’ up close and personal, in all its savage glory, with Liverpool’s premier beat merchants, The Shakers. This fab beat combo perform the hits, misses, B-sides and lost classics from the golden age of Merseybeat with a passion and energy not seen since the heady days of the ‘60s beat boom. As Merseybeat and Hamburg legend Kingsize Taylor said after seeing the boys in action, “I haven’t heard a sound like that since the Star-Club in 1962!

Tony O'Keefe founderFormed in 2005 by drummer Tony O'Keefe, these four lads from Liverpool authentically recreate the look and the sound of those Liverpool days and Hamburg nights, from the Cavern to the Star-Club where the original Mersey sound was born. The group’s ethos is based around the early 60s, as they believe that this is when beat music was at its most exciting.

They have a twice weekly residency at the legendary Cavern Club, Swingin’ Saturdays ‘lunchtime session’ & Shakin’ Sundays, where the boys play to a world-wide audience every week and are established favourites at the worlds’ most famous club. They made their debut International Beatleweek, Liverpool appearance in 2006 to a great reception and were then given the honour of opening the festival every year since, as Liverpool’s beat ambassadors to the worldwide Beatle community.

The Shakers at The CavernSince their inception, they have played far and wide, with shows all over the UK, Europe and the Middle East. Successful headline appearances at the Beatles Day festivals in Switzerland and Italy (including a follow-up appearance at Teatro Adriano in Rome where The Beatles also debuted in the city in 1965), Bavois Beatles Night festival, Switzerland, the Atombeat Festival at Alloa Town Hall in Scotland, two successful trips to Bahrain and barnstorming performances at Liverpool’s Beatles Day event, have solidified their reputation for the best in beat. They also have a UK theatre show tour under their belts and have backed many 60s artists, the most recent being Hamburg legend, Tony Sheridan at the huge ‘Lennon Remembered’ gig at Liverpool’s Echo Arena. Mach Shau indeed!

They continue to tour the UK and are further in demand to represent Liverpool and it’s beat heritage on the worldwide stage.

So, ‘with the hi-fi high and the lights down low’, get ready to twist ‘n’ shout with The Shakers –‘The best Merseybeat group to come out of Liverpool since the 60s!’ – THE BEAT magazine.
