Blue Angels at The CavernThis article was supplied by Keith Turner. Keith is a great supporter of Merseybeat and can often be seen at the many jam sessions around the Merseyside area, he also play regularly in rock n roll bands around the north west. He plays fretless bass and has played with The Spidermen, Bumblies and Riff-Raff. Keith played in the 60's with Saints and The Blues Angels, who have a brick in great Mathew St Wall. He says that he's still having a ball and active.

The Blues Angels started in January 1962  as The Hangmen and started at St marys church hall in wavertree and did parties/weddings... word of mouth stuff.. and our highlight was at Tunnel road cinema on sunday evenings after bingo!

Group changed style and direction to Blues music and on July 1963 became "The Blues Angels" and in July 1964 had an addition to the line up with Charlie Crane -- Vocals/harmonica ( Who later went on to success with the"Cryin Shames" at end of october 1965).

• Charlie Crane -- Blues Harmonica/Vocals

End of October group disbanded as charlie and myself left and the remaining lads regrouped with a few others and ran until January 1966 and finished. We have our name on the "Great Wall" in Matthew Street but it`s shown as the "BLUE Angels" as all names were taken from the Cavern and Liverpool echo columns  and were wrongly pronounced on the nights edition, So we were recorded as Blue Angels...

We enjoyed ourselves and  played at many venues and below is a list of dates we played the Cavern. [Information supplied by Keith Turner]
                     Evening -- Sunday 14th March 1965
                    Lunchtime -- Wednesday 24th March
All Nighter -- Saturday 3rd April
                     Evening -- Saturday 1st May

Hi Guys, Many thanks for putting this info. on the web....It's great to see that even "us little feller's " can have 1/2 an hour of fame.....It's a true fact that the huge majority of Merseybeat era bands had  successful and entertaining times in the "lower levels of the division" and thats true of us...Sad to say that both Derek (Armstrong) and Charlie (Crane) have passed on but the remaining 3 , Keith Turner, Peter Watkins and John Clucas are still about and active...Regards to all who view our treasured memories... Keith.
